Makawi R507A Refrigerant
Makawi R507A Refrigerant
Makawi R507A is an azeotropic blend of the hydrofluorocarbons R-125 and R-143a — that is, it evaporates at a single temperature at constant pressure and its components do not separate. It is blended to match the properties of R-502 and is preferred particularly in low temperature refrigeration applications.
Properties and performance
Its ASHRAE safety group is A1 and its ozone depletion potential is zero. Because of its azeotropic nature there is no temperature glide, which simplifies system control in critical low temperature applications and eliminates composition shift after a leak. Compressor and system manufacturers approve it for use in new refrigeration equipment.
Lubricant
It is not miscible with the traditional oils used in R-502 systems. In a retrofit the existing oil must be changed to POE and the old oil brought to 5% of the total charge or below; otherwise oil return and compressor lubrication are compromised.
Charging
It is charged in the liquid phase so that the correct composition is maintained in the system. Where it must be fed as vapour, a valve that flashes the liquid is fitted to the charging line. R507A requires a manifold set, recovery machine and recovery tank rated for its working pressure.
Retrofitting R-502 systems
It can be used as a retrofit refrigerant in many existing R-502 systems. It is, however, not intended as a drop-in: an oil change is required, and because working pressures are higher than with R-502 the pressure safety devices must be reviewed in line with the equipment manufacturer's retrofit recommendations.

Where it is used
Low and medium temperature commercial refrigeration, supermarket display and storage cabinets, cold stores, transport refrigeration, process cooling, and the retrofit of R-502 systems.
Note: R507A has a high global warming potential (GWP 3,300). Lower-GWP alternatives may be worth evaluating for new systems; ask us for the right choice for your application.
Storage and safety
- Store cylinders upright in a cool, ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and temperatures above 50 °C.
- Liquid refrigerant causes frostbite on contact with skin — wear gloves and eye protection.
- The vapour is heavier than air and displaces oxygen in confined spaces, creating a risk of asphyxiation. Ventilation is essential indoors.
- Never vent to the atmosphere: recover the refrigerant with a recovery unit during service and decommissioning.
- Read the product safety data sheet (SDS) before use.
