Makawi R22 Refrigerant
Makawi R22 (chlorodifluoromethane) is a single-component HCFC refrigerant that was the standard of the air conditioning and refrigeration industry for many years. It has been used across a wide range of applications, from residential and commercial air conditioners to chillers, room air conditioners and transport refrigeration.
Properties and performance
R22 is a single-component, non-flammable refrigerant in ASHRAE group A1. As it is not a blend it has no temperature glide and its composition does not change after a leak. Its oil compatibility is broad: it works with mineral oil, alkylbenzene and POE oils — a significant convenience in field service.
⚠️ Regulatory note
R22 is an HCFC and has a non-zero ozone depletion potential (ODP 0.055). Its production and use are being phased down under the Montreal Protocol, and its use in new equipment is restricted. This product is supplied for the service and maintenance needs of existing R-22 systems. If you wish to convert your system permanently, R407C should be considered.
Lubricant
It can be used with mineral oil, alkylbenzene or POE oil. Follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions when selecting the oil.
Charging
Being single-component it can be charged either as vapour or as liquid. Refer to the manufacturer's manual for the charge quantity.

Where it is used
Servicing existing residential and commercial air conditioning systems, chillers, room air conditioners, and commercial and transport refrigeration equipment.
Storage and safety
- Store cylinders upright in a cool, ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and temperatures above 50 °C.
- Liquid refrigerant causes frostbite on contact with skin — wear gloves and eye protection.
- The vapour is heavier than air and displaces oxygen in confined spaces, creating a risk of asphyxiation. Ventilation is essential indoors.
- Never vent to the atmosphere: recover the refrigerant with a recovery unit during service and decommissioning.
- Read the product safety data sheet (SDS) before use.
